Three Conservatory Alumni Featured in World Premiere of New Musical, ‘Romero and Juliet’

“Romero and Juliet,” a new musical co-created by librettist and lyricist Scott Logsdon ’84 (Bachelor of Music in Music Theatre) and composer Aaron Gandy will receive its world premiere this February in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The new rock musical blends Shakespeare’s tragedy with George Romero’s cult horror and opens Friday, Feb. 13, at the Greer Cabaret Theatre, with additional performances on Valentine’s Day.

The production features two recent Shenandoah Conservatory alumni in leading roles. Matt Kontur ’24 (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre) stars as Romero, while Max Suwarno ’24 (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre) appears as Cutie O (Mercutio). The fully staged premiere follows the musical’s sold-out New York City concert presentation last fall and marks the first complete realization of the work.

Presented by BDE Productions and sponsored by FireWhistle Brewing, the Pittsburgh engagement has already sold more than two-thirds of its run ahead of opening. The production represents an exciting milestone for its creative team and a notable achievement for Shenandoah Conservatory alumni working in new musical development.
